Lighting Innovation: Solar Roads

While driving on glass sounds almost impossible, eight years ago, Scott and Julie Brusaw decided to drive with the idea. With glass that is a half inch thick, tempered, and laminated, they turned the idea into reality. Taking into consideration different weather conditions, hazards, and weights of vehicles the, “The Solar Roadways project, hopes to re-pave the country in custom, glass-covered solar panels that are strong enough to drive on while generating enough power to light the road, melt ice and snow, and send extra energy to cities. Eventually, if every paved surface was covered in the product, the panels would produce more power than the nation uses.”  The glass would contain small heaters to melt the ice in the winter and small LED lights to light up lanes as well as warning lights to tell drivers to slow down during hazardous situations.
