GE Lighting Highlights keeping our agents in the know

Issue #6 - August, 2014

Success Story:LPL Financial Selects Lumination™ LED Luminaires

The nation’s largest independent broker/dealer desired an energy-efficient lighting strategy, but wasn’t sure its net zero goal was achievable. “We went in assuming we couldn’t afford LED office lighting within the project scope, and were hesitant to trust the technology in an interior space,” said Otto Orr, V.P. of project management, corporate real estate, LPL Financial. “We’d seen a lot of advancements with LED in exterior and commercial areas, but hadn’t come across counterparts doing it in a classic office setting. We pushed hard to explore available options with other manufacturers, before we realized GE was in the indoor fixtures market segment.”

GE Blankets Are Here to Enhance Sample Presentation

Over the past two years we have introduced many new fixtures. For virtually all of these launches, we have sent sample fixtures to our reps. While these samples have been well received, we’ve had requests from agents for a “GE blanket” to place the fixtures on when presenting to architects, designers and end-users. You should have received your blanket in the mail last week.

Top 5 Reasons Universities Should Upgrade to LED Lighting

With more than 20 million post-secondary students and over 5 billion square feet of floor space, the higher education sector in the United States spends an estimated $14 billion annually on energy costs (source). Given recent estimates, 31% of energy used by these facilities is directed toward lighting systems, which is the single largest electrical expenditure—space heating and water heating following at 28% and 25%, respectively (source). While greater energy efficiencies can be achieved in many aspects of electrical use, upgrading existing lighting systems represents a unique, and accessible path to reducing both energy use and maintenance costs.

Making the change to energy efficient lighting and controls offers schools an incredible opportunity to free up funds that can be used for academic endeavors rather than operating expenses. Below are the top five reasons colleges and universities should consider upgrading their lighting systems.Read more...

Lighting Innovation: Solar Roads

While driving on glass sounds almost impossible, eight years ago, Scott and Julie Brusaw decided to drive with the idea. With glass that is a half inch thick, tempered, and laminated, they turned the idea into reality. Taking into consideration different weather conditions, hazards, and weights of vehicles the, “The Solar Roadways project, hopes to re-pave the country in custom, glass-covered solar panels that are strong enough to drive on while generating enough power to light the road, melt ice and snow, and send extra energy to cities. Eventually, if every paved surface was covered in the product, the panels would produce more power than the nation uses.”  The glass would contain small heaters to melt the ice in the winter and small LED lights to light up lanes as well as warning lights to tell drivers to slow down during hazardous situations. Gross Sales Ltd. Featured Project: Oxford County Children's Aid Society

MMMC Architects
Millenium Engineering

This new $10.6M office building houses 100 CAS of Oxford County staff whom provide services to families related to children's care.  The 48,000 sq ft building is designed as a high performance building with a target minimum 25% energy cost savings from a typical building its type designed to minimum code standards.  A three storey atrium positioned on the entry west wall allows sunlight to penetrate the building core office spaces as well as providing daylight through roof skylights. Sustainable Design features include: Thirty
five percent greater energy performance efficiency is  expected by way of double wall building envelope with higher than standard insulation values; solar sun shading at perimeter walls and south and west internal sunlight diffusion shelves are designed to divert outside light into the building core; an energy efficient hot water boiler radiator system provides seasonal heat while an energy efficient roof mounted chiller system provides cool conditioned air; an electrical daylight harvesting  system will provide a minimum 35% light energy savings due to lamp lumen self adjustment due to daylight exposure; environmentally friendly building materials maximize recycle content;  and locally sourced building products are selected
to reduce embodied energy in transportation.

Understanding Energy Performance Metrics

Hypothetical situation: You’re looking to purchase a new car. With rising gas prices, fuel efficiency is an important consideration. But would you overlook all other aspects of a car’s performance to get the best fuel efficiency possible? Probably not. “No one would buy a car that does not go very fast and takes a long time to get to maximum speed”. Why then would you do that with your lighting system? If the energy efficiency of a lighting system overshadows the quality of the lighting, the system is inadequate.

Engineers, Lighting Designers and Architects have to practice a similar balancing act to achieve an energy efficient lighting system that also satisfies the needs of building occupants. If you approach it from a pure energy standpoint you might be far from happy with the results. Simply changing light bulbs may be a low-hanging fruit option, but if you don’t look at it holistically, the lighting quality suffers.” Looking only at energy efficiency may initially help the bottom line, but in the long term, looking at lighting systems both from energy-related metrics as well as quality-of-light metrics will save money and keep the building occupants happy.
